What moves the day count
The rate follows the machine rather than the size of the stem, which catches people out: the dedicated mulcher costs more than the excavator even though the excavator takes bigger timber and pulls roots. Transport is the cost of getting the bigger two machines to you and is separate from hauling material away, which is quoted per job.

Hernando County and the City of Brooksville each have a say depending on where your tract sits, and agricultural land is treated differently from a residential homesite.
What is protected depends on the species, the size of the trunk and how the land is classified. Mature live oaks tend to attract more attention than understory growth, and bona fide agricultural operations are generally handled differently from clearing for development.

Because of what was standing. The five acre tract was open enough for the dedicated mulcher to cover ground fast. The three acre one was closed in. This is the clearest example in our whole record that acreage on its own tells you very little.
Can you work on a slope?
Yes, and there is more slope here than most of Florida. Tracked machines handle it. What matters more is how wet the clay is, so a rainy week moves the schedule more than the terrain does.
Will you leave the live oaks?
Yes, and in this county we would usually advise it. Mark them before we come out. Going round a tree is slower than going through it, so selective work can add day count, and we say so when it does.
What happens to everything you cut?
It stays on the ground as mulch, spread as the machine goes. Nothing piled, nothing burned. On clay slopes that layer holds the surface instead of letting it move in the next storm.
Do I need a permit?
It depends on the species and size of what is standing, whether you are inside the City of Brooksville, and how the land is classified. Confirm with the right office rather than taking a contractor word for it, ours included.
Are you licensed and insured?
Insured, and we send the certificate before the machine moves. Florida does not issue a contractor licence for forestry mulching, so nobody holds one. Insurance is the document worth asking every contractor to produce.
