Four steps, and the first two happen before anything leaves our yard.

What moves the day count
The rate follows the machine rather than the size of the stem, which catches people out: the dedicated mulcher costs more than the excavator even though the excavator takes bigger timber and pulls roots. Transport is the cost of getting the bigger two machines to you and is separate from hauling material away, which is quoted per job.

The City of Tallahassee and Leon County each have their own rules and both are more protective than most of Florida. Assume they apply and check rather than the other way round.
What is protected depends on the species and the size of the trunk, and whether the parcel is a single family homesite or land being developed. Mature canopy trees are the point of the local codes here and are treated very differently from understory growth. Whether you are inside the city limits or in the county changes which rules apply and they are not the same.
Tell us what you want gone and what you want kept when you send photographs. If anything you want removed has a trunk worth measuring, settle its status with the right office before anyone books a machine rather than after.

Because of what was standing. Hardwood here runs heavier than most of Florida and the dedicated mulcher gets through stems that would take the skid steer far longer. It is the dearest machine we run and we only send it when it is the right one.
Can you clear under the oaks without damaging them?
Yes, and it is the shape of most work on this ground. You mark what stays, the machine works round it, and the canopy is untouched. Be clear in the photographs about which trees you mean.
What happens to everything you cut?
It stays on the ground as mulch, spread as the machine goes. Nothing piled, nothing burned. On rolling clay that layer holds the surface through the wet months.
Do I need a permit?
Assume yes and check. Both the city and the county here are more protective than most of the state, and which one applies depends on whether you are inside the city limits. Confirm with them rather than taking a contractor word for it, ours included.
Are you licensed and insured?
Insured, and we send the certificate before the machine moves. Florida does not issue a contractor licence for forestry mulching, so nobody holds one. Insurance is the document worth asking every contractor to produce.
