How the work runs
Four steps, and the first two happen before anything leaves our yard.
Pictures with something in frame for scale, the parcel size, and a note on what you want left standing. On rolling ground a shot from the low side tells us more than one from the top.
Usually the same day. It is a day count against a published rate, not a guess dressed up as a quote. Jefferson has run well for us so far.
The mulching head cuts, grinds and spreads as it goes. No separate clear, pile and haul stage, which is where most of the cost and all of the mess normally sits.
Not bare clay and not a field of cut stems. On a slope that chip layer is doing real work holding the surface where it is.

What moves the day count
The rate follows the machine rather than the size of the stem, which catches people out: the dedicated mulcher costs more than the excavator even though the excavator takes bigger timber and pulls roots. Transport is the cost of getting the bigger two machines to you and is separate from hauling material away, which is quoted per job.

Three of the four were single machine days, and the largest of them was four acres. The one that took two days was a single acre in April 2025, which is the same lesson this whole county teaches: what is standing matters more than how much ground it stands on. Only one of the four recorded a machine, and that job ran with the skid steer mulcher.

Jefferson County is rural and much of the land here is in timber or agricultural use, which is treated differently from a residential lot inside Monticello.
Silvicultural work under an approved forestry practice is generally handled differently from clearing for development, and the rules for a lot in town are not the ones for a timber block outside it. Live oaks of any size tend to attract more attention than understory growth.

Can you work on a slope?
Yes, and there is more slope here than most of Florida. Tracked machines handle it. What matters is how wet the clay is, so a rainy week moves the schedule more than the terrain does.
Will you leave the live oaks?
Yes, and in this county we would usually advise it. Mark them before we come out. A mulcher going round a tree is slower than one going through it, so selective work can add day count, and we will say so when it does.
What happens to everything you cut?
It stays on the ground as mulch, spread as the machine goes. Nothing piled, nothing burned. On clay slopes that layer holds the surface where it is instead of letting it move in the next storm.
Do I need a permit?
It depends on the species and size of what is standing, on whether you are inside Monticello, and on how the land is classified. Confirm with the right office rather than taking a contractor word for it, ours included.
Are you licensed and insured?
Insured, and we send the certificate before the machine moves. Florida does not issue a contractor licence for forestry mulching, so nobody holds one. Insurance is the document worth asking every contractor to produce.
