How the work runs
Four steps, and the first two happen before anything leaves our yard.
Pictures with something in frame for scale, the parcel size, and a note on what you want left standing. On a city parcel a shot of the access matters as much as a shot of the growth.
Usually the same day. It is a day count against a published rate, not a guess dressed up as a quote. Orange County has run close to a day an acre for us on the bigger parcels.
The mulching head cuts, grinds and spreads as it goes. No separate clear, pile and haul stage, which is where most of the cost and all of the mess normally sits.
Not bare sand and not a field of cut stems. It holds the surface through the summer storms and slows down what comes back.

What moves the day count
The rate follows the machine rather than the size of the stem, which catches people out: the dedicated mulcher costs more than the excavator even though the excavator takes bigger timber and pulls roots. Transport is the cost of getting the bigger two machines to you and is separate from hauling material away, which is quoted per job.
What we have actually done in Orlando
Five finished jobs and seven machine days, from January 2025 to June 2026. All of it inside the last eighteen months, which makes this our fastest growing county.

Three of the five finished inside a single machine day, and the two larger parcels took two days each. Every one of the five ran with the skid steer mulcher, which is unusual: most counties see a mix. Across Orange County, setting aside one job we do not publish details of, we have finished ten jobs and eleven and a half machine days.

The City of Orlando and Orange County each run their own tree rules, and which applies depends on whether your parcel is inside the city limits. Worth a look before you decide what comes down.
What is protected depends on the species and the size of the trunk, and whether the parcel is a single family homesite or land being developed. Larger specimen trees and live oaks are generally treated more carefully than understory growth or invasive species, and removing undergrowth is usually a different question from taking down a mature canopy tree.

On current form, the skid steer mulcher. All five Orlando jobs have gone out with it, which matters to your bill because that is the machine with transport included in the rate rather than added to it.
Can you work on a suburban lot without upsetting the neighbours?
That is the main reason people call for mulching rather than conventional clearing. Everything stays on site as chip, so there is no burn and no line of trucks down the street. One machine, one pass, gone the same day on most parcels.
What happens to everything you cut?
It stays on the ground as mulch, spread as the machine goes. Nothing piled, nothing burned. It holds the sand through the summer storms and slows down what comes back.
Do I need a permit?
It depends on the species and size of what is standing, and on whether you are inside the City of Orlando or in unincorporated Orange County. Confirm your parcel with the right office rather than taking a contractor word for it, ours included.
Are you licensed and insured?
Insured, and we send the certificate before the machine moves. Florida does not issue a contractor licence for forestry mulching, so nobody holds one. Insurance is the document worth asking every contractor to produce.
