What we clear in Lake City

Eight things we are actually asked for on Columbia County ground. If your job is not on this list, say so and we will tell you straight whether it is ours.

Forestry mulching

One machine cuts standing growth and grinds it back into the ground as chip in the same pass. No pile, no burn, no trucks.

Lot and acreage clearing

Anything from a town lot that has closed in to ten acres of planted pine understory, back to ground you can walk and drive.

Underbrush removal

Gallberry, yaupon and briar taken out from under planted pine or standing hardwood you are keeping.

Selective clearing

You mark what stays and we cut round it, which on a working timber block is usually most of what is standing.

Excavator clearing and grubbing

Where the roots have to come out rather than the top growth being ground off. Our 30 inch excavator mulcher.

Home site preparation

Building envelope, drive and pad taken down to workable ground before your builder arrives.

Lane and firebreak cutting

A lane in from the road, a break round a block, or a line cut so a truck can reach the back of the place.

Fence and boundary lines

A line you can run wire along or walk, cut without disturbing the timber either side of it.

Who calls us in Columbia County

Timber owners

This is planted pine country and understory between rotations is the standing job. Ten acres of it is a normal ask here, not an unusual one.

Owners of a lot in town

Lots inside an existing street that have grown in. A third of an acre took us a single day here.

People about to build

Clearing the envelope, the drive and the pad before the builder mobilises, so the site is ready rather than a delay.

Owners with acreage they have never walked

Blocks bought and held. A cut line through the middle tells you what you own before you plan anything round it.

Hunters and lease holders

Lanes, shooting lines and access cut through a block without opening the whole thing up.

Sellers and agents

A parcel nobody can walk is a parcel nobody buys. A day with a mulcher changes what a buyer is looking at.

How the work runs

Four steps, and the first two happen before anything leaves our yard.

Send photographs

Pictures with something in frame for scale, the acreage, and a note on what you want left standing. On a big block, show us the worst corner rather than the best.

We give you a real number

Usually the same day. It is a day count against a published rate, not a guess dressed up as a quote.

One machine, one pass

The mulching head cuts, grinds and spreads as it goes. No separate clear, pile and haul stage, which is where most of the cost and all of the mess normally sits.

You get a mulch layer

Not bare sand and not a field of cut stems. Between planted rows that chip layer is a head start on the next rotation rather than something to clean up.

What it costs

We sell machine days, not acres, and we publish the rates. Our two Columbia jobs are the widest pair on our books at a third of an acre and ten acres, and the day count between them only moved by four.

Skid steer mulcherFrom $3,000

Stems to 8 inches. Transport included. The machine for a town lot or a small parcel

Excavator mulcherFrom $3,500

Stems to 30 inches, and grubbing. Plus transport

Dedicated mulcherFrom $4,000

Stems to 24 inches. Plus transport. The dearest machine we run

What moves the day count

How open the ground already isStanding timber you want keptWet ground in the branch bottomsOld fence wireAccess off the highwayWhole blocks in one visit

The rate follows the machine rather than the size of the stem, which catches people out: the dedicated mulcher costs more than the excavator even though the excavator takes bigger timber and pulls roots. Transport is the cost of getting the bigger two machines to you and is separate from hauling material away, which is quoted per job.

What we have actually done in Lake City

One finished job, a third of an acre, a single machine day, Dec 2023. The other Columbia job is where the interesting number is.

Dec 2023A third of an acre, 1 machine day, machine not recorded on the scope
Apr 2024, elsewhere in the countyTen acres, 4 machine days
The county totalTwo jobs, 5 machine days, across a thirty fold range in acreage

Thirty times the ground for four times the days. That is the single strongest argument on this site for buying machine days rather than acres, and it happened inside one county. Neither scope records the machine, so we are not going to tell you which went. If your block is large and reasonably open, the acreage will frighten you far more than the quote will.

The ground on a Columbia County block

What grows hereLongleaf and loblolly pine over most of it, a great deal of it planted in rows, live oak and hickory in the hammocks, and gallberry, yaupon and briar underneath wherever fire has been out of the system
What that means for a machinePlanted pine with an open understory is fast ground and a machine covers a lot of it in a day. Hardwood hammock and thick gallberry are the slow parts and are usually a small share of a block
WaterBranch bottoms and the river ground on the county edges hold water into the spring. The uplands drain well and work nearly all year
AccessHighways, county roads and clay tracks. Most blocks have room to turn a low loader, and the approach after a wet week is what is worth photographing

The acreage between our two Columbia County jobs. The day count only moved by four. On open ground the acreage is far less frightening than it sounds.

What customers say

★★★★★

FloridaLandClearing.com was beyond helpful in getting our property cleared. They were spot on with their quote, their crews arrived on time, and the machines they used were impressive to watch.

Jenny Anderson
★★★★★

We had a difficult project a few other companies attempted and left. Florida Land Clearing was able to get the job done and a day earlier than quoted.

Joseph Kelly
★★★★★

These guys are pros. Watching these machines just devour acres of underbrush in a day was one of the coolest things I have seen. I cannot believe how this transformed my property.

Before you book: trees on a Columbia County block

Columbia County and the City of Lake City each have a say depending on where your parcel sits, and land in genuine silvicultural use is treated differently again.

What is protected depends on the species and the size of the trunk, and whether the parcel is a single family homesite, working timber or land being developed. In a county with this much planted pine on it the silvicultural questions come up more often than the tree by tree ones do.

Tell us what you want gone and what you want kept when you send photographs. If the ground is in a timber programme of any kind, say so early, because that changes which office you should be asking.

We are a clearing contractor, not the permit office, and we do not file applications. Confirm your own parcel and your own trees with Columbia County or the City of Lake City before you commit.

Lake City questions

How much does it cost to clear land in Lake City?

From $3,000 a machine day. Our job here was a third of an acre and a single day. Ten acres elsewhere in the county took four days. Send photographs and we will tell you which end of that your block sits at.

Can you do ten acres?

We have, in this county, in four machine days. Whether yours takes four or considerably more depends on how open it already is, which is what the photographs are for.

Do you work on planted pine?

Yes, and underbrushing between rows is normal work here. If the ground is in a timber programme, tell us, because the rules that apply are not the same as for a homesite.

Which machine did you use here?

We are not going to guess. Neither Columbia scope on our books records it, and we would rather say so than tell you something we cannot show.

What happens to everything you cut?

It stays on the ground as mulch, spread as the machine goes. Nothing piled, nothing burned. Between planted rows that layer is a head start rather than a mess.

Do I need a permit?

It depends on the species and size of what is standing, whether you are inside the City of Lake City, and whether the ground counts as working timber. Confirm with the right office rather than taking a contractor word for it, ours included.

Are you licensed and insured?

Insured, and we send the certificate before the machine moves. Florida does not issue a contractor licence for forestry mulching, so nobody holds one. Insurance is the document worth asking every contractor to produce.
