What we clear in Dunnellon

Eight things we are actually asked for on this ground. If your job is not on this list, say so and we will tell you straight whether it is ours.

Forestry mulching

One machine cuts standing growth and grinds it back into the ground as chip in the same pass. No pile, no burn, no trucks.

Vacant lot clearing

A lot that has closed in, cleared where it stands. The parcel here was three quarters of an acre and it went in the day.

Underbrushing

Palmetto, briar and privet taken out from under the hardwoods along the river, so the ground under them can be walked and seen.

Selective clearing

You mark what stays. On a river lot that list usually includes everything with a view attached to it.

Excavator clearing and grubbing

Where the root plate has to be lifted rather than left. The 30 inch excavator, quoted apart from a mulching day.

Home site preparation

Envelope, drive and pad opened to workable ground ahead of a builder.

Access cutting

A drive line in from the road on a parcel that has grown shut at the front.

Fence and boundary lines

A boundary cut to a width you set, without going into what stands either side of it.

Who calls us in Dunnellon and the river country

Owners of a lot near the water

The commonest call here. A parcel bought for what is on it and around it, where clearing is about opening ground rather than stripping it.

People about to build

Envelope, drive and pad taken down before the builder mobilises, and nothing else on the parcel touched.

Owners of ground on the sand ridge

Away from the river the going changes completely. Free draining, open and quick, and it prices differently from the same acreage down by the water.

Buyers and sellers

Ground nobody can walk is ground nobody prices properly, and out here a parcel that cannot be seen into is usually underpriced.

People with wet ground on part of the parcel

Springs, swales and seep lines run through this country. Photograph the wet part, because it changes both the machine and the month.

People quoted by the acre

Three quarters of an acre of river hardwood and the same area of sand ridge scrub are not the same job and should not carry the same number.

How the work runs

Four steps. On river country the useful one is the first, because two parcels the same size can be completely different jobs.

Send photographs, including the low end

The part nearest the water tells us more than the frontage does. If part of the parcel is wet for months of the year we would rather see it than be told about it.

We give you a day count

Usually the same day. Three quarters of an acre here was one day. On heavier river ground the same area can be two, and we will say which we think yours is.

One machine, one pass

The head cuts, grinds and spreads as it goes. Nothing is stacked, nothing is burnt and nothing is hauled out along a road that was not built for trucks.

You get a mulch layer

Chip spread where the growth stood. Near water that layer matters more than usual, because bare ground on a slope does not stay where it is put.

What it costs

We sell machine days, not acres, and we publish the rates. This parcel was one day. Out here the same acreage can be one day or two depending on which side of the ridge it sits on, which is why we ask for pictures.

Skid steer mulcherFrom $3,000

Stems to 8 inches. Transport included. The machine recorded on the parcel here

Excavator mulcherFrom $3,500

Stems to 30 inches, and grubbing. Plus transport

Dedicated mulcherFrom $4,000

Stems to 24 inches. Plus transport. The dearest machine we run

What moves the day count

What is standing nowHow long it has stoodWhere the machine gets inTrees you want keptWet ground and soft edgesWhether the roots come out

The rate follows the machine rather than the size of the stem, which catches people out: the dedicated mulcher costs more than the excavator even though the excavator takes bigger timber and pulls roots. Transport is the cost of getting the bigger two machines to you and is separate from hauling material away, which is quoted per job.

The four day acre in the last row is the useful number on this page. It is the same acreage as several single day jobs in the same county, and the difference was entirely what was standing on it.

What this ground does to a day count

Sand ridgeFree draining, open and quick. The fastest going in this part of the county.
River hardwoodHeavier timber along the water than anywhere on the ridge above it, and it slows a machine right down.
Limestone close to the surfaceRock near the top changes what an excavator can do and sometimes decides whether roots can come out at all.
Springs and seep linesWet all year in places that look dry in a photograph taken in May. Worth walking before you book.
Palmetto and scrub oakStandard understorey work and predictable to price.
Ground that has stood a decadeThe single biggest multiplier on a day count anywhere in this county.
9 of 10

Finished jobs in Levy County that took a single machine day, out of ten. The tenth was an acre that needed four, on ground heavy enough to justify the biggest machine we run. Same county, same year, four times the day count.

What customers say

★★★★★

FloridaLandClearing.com was beyond helpful in getting our property cleared. They were spot on with their quote, their crews arrived on time, and the machines they used were impressive to watch.

Jenny Anderson
★★★★★

We had a difficult project a few other companies attempted and left. Florida Land Clearing was able to get the job done and a day earlier than quoted.

Joseph Kelly
★★★★★

These guys are pros. Watching these machines just devour acres of underbrush in a day was one of the coolest things I have seen. I cannot believe how this transformed my property.

Permits around Dunnellon are yours

Every county and city in Florida writes its own tree rules and they are not the same. What is protected depends on the species, the size of the trunk and how your parcel is classified.

This is county line country and which authority you are dealing with is not always obvious from the address. Establish which county your parcel actually sits in before you ask anybody a question about trees, because the answer differs.

If the parcel is inside a city limit then the city is your authority instead, and municipal rules in Florida tend to be the stricter of the two. Where ground runs down to a river or a spring run there are water rules on top of the tree rules.

We are a clearing contractor, not the permit office, and we do not file applications. Confirm your own parcel and your own trees with the county your parcel sits in, or your city before you commit.

Dunnellon questions

What does it cost to clear a lot near Dunnellon?

From $3,000, which is one machine day. The parcel here was one day. On heavier ground nearer the water the same acreage can take longer, and photographs are how we tell the difference.

Why does the same acreage cost different amounts out here?

Because the ground changes within a few hundred yards. This county has nine jobs that took one day and one acre that took four, and the difference was what was standing rather than how big the parcel was.

Which county am I actually in?

Worth checking before you ask anyone about trees. Parcels around here sit either side of a county line and the rules are not the same on both sides of it. Our own job here is logged in Levy County.

Can you work near a spring run?

We stop short of protected water and tell you exactly where we stopped. Anything closer than that is a question for the water authority rather than for us.

Do you work the rest of Levy County?

Yes, and it is one of our busiest. Ten finished jobs across four towns, listed on the county page with acreages and day counts next to them.

Are you licensed and insured?

Insured, and we send the certificate before the machine moves. Florida does not issue a contractor licence for forestry mulching, so nobody holds one. Insurance is the document worth asking every contractor to produce.
