Brush clearing in Glen Saint Mary
Glen Saint Mary sits in Baker County, a few miles west of Macclenny on the edge of the Osceola flatwoods. What grows back on a lot here is fairly predictable: saw palmetto, gallberry and yaupon under slash pine, with the odd oak. Most of it comes off in a single day with a mulching head, without a burn pile and without a line of trucks.

What the work actually is
A mulching head cuts, grinds and spreads in the same pass. The material stays on your ground as a chip layer instead of being stacked at the frontage waiting on a truck. Nothing is burned and nothing leaves the site. On the sand you get in this part of the county that chip layer is doing useful work — it holds the soil through the wet season instead of letting it wash.
What it is not is grading. If your site needs finished levels, that is a different contractor. And if the roots have to come out of the ground rather than be ground off at grade, that is grubbing, which needs the excavator and is quoted at a different day rate.
Which machine your lot needs
This is the single biggest thing that moves your price, and it comes down to the thickest stems standing. Measure the two or three biggest and tell us.
- Skid steer mulcher — stems to 8 inches — from $3,000 a machine day, transport included. The everyday machine, and the one most Baker County lots need.
- Excavator mulcher — stems to 30 inches, and grubbing — from $3,500 a machine day, plus transport. The only one of the three that takes roots and stumps out.
- Dedicated mulcher — stems to 24 inches — from $4,000 a machine day, plus transport. The dearest machine we run.
The rate follows the machine rather than the size of stem it can take, which catches people out: the dedicated mulcher costs more per day than the excavator even though the excavator handles thicker timber and pulls roots. What it costs
We sell machine days, not acres, and we publish the rates. A machine day is eight hours of machine time on your ground. An acre of light palmetto and an acre of twenty years of growth are the same acre on a deed and completely different jobs on the ground, so any price quoted off acreage alone is a guess about which of those two you have. Permits
County tree and clearing rules in Florida almost always apply to the unincorporated county only. If your parcel sits inside town limits, the town code governs instead. Thresholds and fees are set locally and are not comparable between counties — some trigger a permit on any site development, others only past a set acreage, and fees range from a flat review charge to pricing by tree size.

What are the benefits of professional brush clearing services?
Three practical ones. You get access to ground you could not walk before, you cut the fuel load sitting against your buildings and fence lines, and a surveyor, fence crew or builder can actually get on the parcel. Done with a mulcher you also skip the pile, the burn permit and the haul-away, which is where most of the cost and all of the mess normally sits.
How often should brush clearing be done in Glen Saint Mary?
It depends on what came off and what you want the ground to stay like, and we would be wary of anyone quoting you a fixed interval. Mulched palmetto and gallberry in this part of north Florida generally come back enough to notice within two or three seasons, faster on wetter ground and faster again if the canopy is open. Does brush clearing help prevent wildfires?
It reduces the fuel available for one to carry, which is not the same as preventing it. It lowers risk. It does not remove it, and nobody honest will tell you otherwise.
Can brush clearing help prepare land for construction or farming?
For getting a site accessible and worked, yes — that is most of what we do. But be clear on what stays in the ground. Mulching grinds material off at grade and leaves the root mass in place, which is fine for pasture, access and most site prep, and not fine if you need footings or a clean cut-and-fill.
